Summary

500 years ago: eight martyrs were burnt to death
30 years ago: two teenagers vanished without trace
Two months ago: the vicar committed suicide

Welcome to Chapel Croft。

For Rev Jack Brooks and teenage daughter Flo it's supposed to be a fresh start。 New job, new home。 But, as Jack knows, the past isn't easily forgotten。

And in a close-knit community where the residents seem as proud as they are haunted by Chapel Croft's history, Jack must tread carefully。 Ancient superstitions as well as a mistrust of outsiders will be hard to overcome。

Yet right away Jack has more frightening concerns。

Why is Flo plagued by visions of burning girls?
Who's sending them sinister, threatening messages?
And why did no one mention that the last vicar killed himself?

Chapel Croft's secrets lie deep and dark as the tomb。 Jack wouldn't touch them if not for Flo - anything to protect Flo。

But the past is catching up with Chapel Croft - and with Jack。 For old ghosts with scores to settle will never rest 。 。 。

This book is a mix bag for me, there were things I really enjoyed and things I didn't enjoy so well which ultimately rounded it out to a 4⭐First of all, I have to say that the atmosphere of this book was super creepy and mysterious which I absolutely adored! The suspense was ridiculously high and I loved every moment。I loved our main character Jack and her connection to her daughter Flo。 Their relationship felt very real and natural which I adored。I don't think there was a character in the story who wasn't well developed and CJ Tudor did a great job in fleshing out the characters and setting。Now in terms of the storyline, I guessed the final twist by page 40。。。 Though I wasn't mad about it。 I've spoken to someone else who read the book and they said they didn't guess quite as early so I am giving myself smarty pants points。I enjoyed the 3 main story lines。 The burning of the martyrs, the missing girls and current events。 Each of the ideas were well thought out and well written。My issue with this is that I don't think they came together very well。Revelations happened and it felt like a rushed attempt to connect the stories。The main plot of the story in my opinion was not relevant to the rest of the story and the 2 stories from the past had a few missed opportunities to really tie the story together and as a result I feel like this became 3 separate stories with a very thin connection。That's my only criticism, that the stories weren't successfully blended to create a really well thought out story。 It feel like the author had an idea, spent time really developing the ideas then realised they didn't connect and wrote a quick explanation to round it off。Overall, it was a fascinating read and well worth your time to get into!!!! 。。。more

Grim little book! Enjoyable, even if some twists are predictable, the writing and the exposure of darkest humans behaviours are highly enjoyable!

Phenomenal twists and turns。 Once every two chapters is a HOLY SHIT moment。 Amazing writing style。 Fell in love with the characters。

Jessica Griglak

Great book。 Full of unexpected twists and really well written。

Found that C。J。 Tudor has written all really good books, one of my favourite authors。 Knows how to captivate the reader and find myself wanting more once its done。 Really enjoyable book with really good and interesting storyline。

Took my time getting through this one, as there as something profoundly comforting about the characters, oddly enough, given that the story itself is reasonably dark。 Anyway, a solid thriller with some cool twists, and it's clear with THE BURNING GIRLS that Tudor is an absolute master of the end-of-chapter cliffhanger。 Really good。 Took my time getting through this one, as there as something profoundly comforting about the characters, oddly enough, given that the story itself is reasonably dark。 Anyway, a solid thriller with some cool twists, and it's clear with THE BURNING GIRLS that Tudor is an absolute master of the end-of-chapter cliffhanger。 Really good。 。。。more

When I first started reading this I thought it was going to be really scary but its ended up being a complex and enjoyable thriller which keeps you guessing until the end

Woah! A good read! The wrap up was a little improbable but it was intriguing getting there!

Firstly I admit I adored The Chalk Man, but The Taking of Annie Thorne (audio book) left me cold & I'm afraid to say I feel the same way about this book。 It just didn't live up to the hype。 Usually I'd be annoyed I'd wasted money but, luckily for me, I'd borrowed the ebook from my library。 Firstly I admit I adored The Chalk Man, but The Taking of Annie Thorne (audio book) left me cold & I'm afraid to say I feel the same way about this book。 It just didn't live up to the hype。 Usually I'd be annoyed I'd wasted money but, luckily for me, I'd borrowed the ebook from my library。 。。。more

Not quite Gothic horror, not quite thriller, not quite mystery (but a bit of all of these), yet still an entertaining read。 This reads like a mashup of Dennis Lehane, Laura Purcell, and Gillian Flynn。 It's a strange combination, but somehow, here, it works。 Not quite Gothic horror, not quite thriller, not quite mystery (but a bit of all of these), yet still an entertaining read。 This reads like a mashup of Dennis Lehane, Laura Purcell, and Gillian Flynn。 It's a strange combination, but somehow, here, it works。 。。。more

Excellent story! There are little hints along the way but it’s not until the very end of the book that everything becomes obvious。 I love books that surprise。 The plot is dark。 The tension piles。 You get a real sense of dread as you start to piece things together。

Priscilla Schwab

This is one of those books that, when you start reading, you wonder if you’ll find another book that is just as good and compelling。 I really didn’t want this story to end!

Holy crap on a cracker!! This one was recommended to me and I see why now。 Twists and turns you never see coming with thrills and chills to keep you up all night!!

I was entertained by this, but never completely hooked。 At times it felt like there were too many things happening without enough plot to drive the book。 But the ending was excellent, bringing everything together in a way I didn't see coming but (with a slight suspension of disbelief) worked so well with the events leading up to the climax。 I was entertained by this, but never completely hooked。 At times it felt like there were too many things happening without enough plot to drive the book。 But the ending was excellent, bringing everything together in a way I didn't see coming but (with a slight suspension of disbelief) worked so well with the events leading up to the climax。 。。。more

2。5。 When even I can see the twists a quarter of the way through the book, you know they're too heavy handed。 2。5。 When even I can see the twists a quarter of the way through the book, you know they're too heavy handed。 。。。more

The ups and downs of the plot were engaging and there were some genuine surprises。 But, also, it was all kinda shallow。 it was fine but nothing special

Wow。 Ok。 I admit I wasn't expecting the twists and turns that this story took。 Stories, really。 There were several plot lines going on at the same time, only the reader doesn't truly know it until the very end。 This book kept my interest。 It creeped me out, angered me, made me nauseous, made me laugh, confused me, then unraveled each twist until I understood the big picture。 It's a good read。 But, you can lose track of all of the characters and that can get confusing。 For me, listening to the au Wow。 Ok。 I admit I wasn't expecting the twists and turns that this story took。 Stories, really。 There were several plot lines going on at the same time, only the reader doesn't truly know it until the very end。 This book kept my interest。 It creeped me out, angered me, made me nauseous, made me laugh, confused me, then unraveled each twist until I understood the big picture。 It's a good read。 But, you can lose track of all of the characters and that can get confusing。 For me, listening to the audio book along with reading helped a lot。 Definitely a 3。5-4⭐ read。 。。。more

Slow start but exciting finish, 4。5 stars rounded up。 Jack is refreshingly different from many clergy in fiction。 Neither naive and sanctimonious, nor bitterly disillusioned, this priest is securely devout yet realistic about religion's limitations。 No one is pure; the only meaningful dividing line is between true sociopaths and people who sin out of desperation。The ending was surprising and will haunt me for awhile。 Speaking of haunts, I'm undecided about the paranormal element。 It certainly ad Slow start but exciting finish, 4。5 stars rounded up。 Jack is refreshingly different from many clergy in fiction。 Neither naive and sanctimonious, nor bitterly disillusioned, this priest is securely devout yet realistic about religion's limitations。 No one is pure; the only meaningful dividing line is between true sociopaths and people who sin out of desperation。The ending was surprising and will haunt me for awhile。 Speaking of haunts, I'm undecided about the paranormal element。 It certainly added to the claustrophobic and grim atmosphere of the village setting, but it didn't turn out to be germane to the mystery's resolution。 On the other hand, it helps us take Jack's faith seriously when we see evidence that the spirit world is real。 。。。more

This book was good - a little different than the usual thrillers and more of a horror。 I don’t know why people are putting reviews saying it was terrifying and they couldn’t sleep… I didn’t think it was that bad at all。
